On Friday (April 27, 2018) the House of Commons approved the Third Reading of the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Bill. The bill now progresses to the House of Lords.
The bill looks to bring in harsher penalties against those who attack blue light workers.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dave Walton (pictured right) welcomed the news.
He said: “We are delighted that the bill received such overwhelming support in the House of Commons and that it has passed through to the House of Lords.
“This is a significant landmark and a step closer to our firefighters, and indeed our blue light colleagues, receiving the protection they deserve as they go about their roles protecting the community.
“We thank all of the MPs who have given this bill their backing.”
On Friday West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service released a video showing Crew Commander Tom talking about his experiences of working Bonfire Night 2017 and the attacks that himself and his crew came under from the reckless few people who engage in this kind of behaviour.
