Firefighters have the opportunity to progress: for example, leading crews, fire stations or districts, or becoming specialists in areas such as fire safety, fire investigation, USAR (Urban Search and Rescue), technical rescue and command support. Key to this is demonstrating the right skills and abilities throughout.

Crew Manager: are mainly responsible for fire appliances and their crew. They may also take charge of smaller incidents and provide support to watch commanders.

Watch Manager: lead a number of smaller teams at larger incidents. They may also work in areas such as fire safety inspection.

Station Manager/Assistant District Manager: they are mainly responsible for effective service delivery at one or more stations. They may also command larger incidents.

We also have crew, watch and station managers who are in specialist posts.

District or Group Manager: are responsible for ensuring our services are delivered effectively across a geographic area (Calderdale, Bradford, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield), or manage teams in HR, Community Fire Safety or Operations. They may command larger incidents.

Area Manager: they often lead operational departments or support functions.

Assistant Chief Officer (ACO): reporting to the Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive and has strategic responsibility for our Service Support directorate.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO): has strategic responsibility for our Service Delivery directorate and directly supports the Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive.

Chief Fire Officer (CFO)/Chief Executive: leads West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service – responsible for ensuring we deliver our strategic objectives, aim and ambition: “Making West Yorkshire Safer”.
