Fire Authority re-elects Chair

At the Full Authority Meeting of June 29 Councillor Judith Hughes was re-appointed as the Chair of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority (WYFRA) for the 2018-19 year.

The Almondbury councillor was elected as the first female leader of WYFRA in 2014 and prior to that she served as the deputy for two years, as well as previously being the Chair of the Finance Committee.

Chief Fire Officer John Roberts said: “We welcome Councillor Hughes back as Chair of the Fire Authority, in which position she has shown dedicated service for the last four years.

“We are also delighted that Wakefield councillor Tracey Austin has been re-appointed as the Vice Chair of the Authority for the next year.”

Councillor Hughes was elected to Kirklees Council in 2011 and is born and bred in Huddersfield.

Nine new councillors have been appointed to the Authority.

They are:

Labour Councillor Olivia Rowley (Wakefield)

Labour Councillor Angela Wenham (Leeds)

Conservative Councillor Richard Hunt (Wakefield)

Liberal Democrat Councillor Ryk Downes (Leeds)

Liberal Democrat Councillor Jeanette Sunderland (Bradford)

The Authority is made up of 22 councillors who are appointed annually by each of the five local metropolitan districts; Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield.

Its political composition is 14 Labour, 6 Conservative and two Liberal Democrat.
