On-call firefighters are not based at station, but when on-call, individuals must be able to reach their station within five minutes of their alerter going off.

They deal with incidents ranging from property fires, road traffic collisions, chemical spills, to animal rescues, flood and storm damage. On-call firefighters can also be called to respond to major incidents across West Yorkshire – not just in their local area. They also carry out duties which prevent or reduce the risk of fire occurring in the first place.  This includes engaging in community safety activities to keep both local businesses and people in their homes safe and well.

On-call firefighters are usually required to commit to between 50 hours (minimum) and 120 hours (maximum) per week in order to fulfil the duties of the on-call stations.  Being an on-call firefighter can fit around a person’s primary commitments, be that another job/s or commitments at home.

In return, they receive a basic salary, additional fees and annual leave. They gain many transferrable skills through training and development, including team working, leadership, communication, first aid, trauma care, fire and health and safety.
