  • Position: Operational Risk - Fire Protection Officer

    Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent, Job Share

    Description:

    The post holder will be responsible for gathering, processing and dissemination of high-level risk information to the Operations function. Fire fighter safety is closely linked to the understanding of how fire protection engineering strategies in buildings can influence the tactical deployment of fire fighters to deal with fires. Therefore, you will be responsible for ensuring that specialist knowledge of building design and fire protection technologies is imparted to increased operational effectiveness and fire fighter safety through risk response planning and operational strategies.

    The post holder will also be responsible for the Authority in the discharge of its fire protection duties and responsibilities in the West Yorkshire region.  

    The principle duties of the post involve assisting departments in the evaluation of risk information held for premises within the region to ensure the risk information is relevant and correct. The successful applicant will work alongside the Operational Risk team in producing and disseminating relevant risk information for risk sites in West Yorkshire.

    You should have the ability to work flexibly with minimum supervision to meet priorities and be an innovative thinker in relation to fire protection-based issues and operational risks.

    Description:

    Due to maternity leave a rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join one of the country’s leading Fire and Rescue Services on a fixed term contract (up to 12 months); to become part of a family where everyone plays their part in making West Yorkshire Safer. 

    The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make an impact on the organisation and help to develop long term solutions based on financial analysis, improving financial monitoring systems and financial awareness within the organization. 

    As an Accounts Officer you will be pivotal in the closure of the Authority’s Annual Statement of Accounts, liaising with our external auditor and have a strong background working with financial statements (preferably in the public sector). 

    You will be a fully or part qualified accountant with experience of providing financial information to a range of users and comfortable working within a team. You will have extensive knowledge and experience of accounting policies and procedure alongside an appreciation and application of the CIPFA Code of practice in order to deliver a compliant set of financial statements. This role is aligned to role 1 of the Accounts Officer Job Description.

    Description:

    An opportunity has arisen for Crew Managers (CMs) to work at Garforth, Morley, Rawdon, Rothwell & Wetherby Fire Stations on the Day Crewing (DC) duty system within West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS). We are responsible for the county’s fire and rescue service, which serves a population of more than two million people spread over almost 800 square miles.  Fire cover is provided 24-hours a day, every day of the year.  We are an organisation where everyone is encouraged, trusted and supported to play their part in promoting safety and wellbeing across all communities in West Yorkshire. We are looking for candidates who are committed to our vision of making West Yorkshire safer and who demonstrate the values of team, responsibility, integrity, dialogue and learn.

    The DC duty system is where DC staff members work a combination of positive and standby hours over a 24 hour period. Positive hours are worked on the fire station or appliance and standby hours are worked ‘on call’ from a residence within a 5 minute ‘turn in’ area of the station.

    Therefore, staff members working the DC duty system are required to reside within a 5 minute turn in area of the station in either permanent or rented accommodation for which an additional allowance is payable to the staff member.

    Applications are welcome from existing wholetime and Retained Duty System (RDS) CMs. These vacancies are for wholetime Crew Manager positions.

    Eligibility

    The following criteria must be satisfied to be eligible to apply:

    • be a wholetime/RDS substantive and competent CM (or above) in a UK Fire and Rescue Service.
    • Possess an IFE Level 3 Certificate in Fire Service Operations AND Level 3 Certificate in Fire Engineering and Science OR Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety OR equivalent relevant qualifications
    • have no current/outstanding development action plans, performance improvement action plans or capability issues related to competency.
    • be free of current formal disciplinary awards throughout the entire process.
    • have achieved a grade ‘A’ or ‘B’ score in your latest Personal Development Review (PDR) (internal only)

    The selection process will comprise of:

    Stage 1 – Identify potential via the PDR process (‘A’ or ‘B’ score) Internal only
    Stage 2 - Completion of an online application form and subsequent shortlisting
    Stage 3 - Presentation and Interview
    Stage 4 – Operational Command Development/Assessment
    Stage 5 – Pre-employment checks

    • Basic CM salary
    • 5% of salary for the ‘on call’ element
    • Turnout and disturbance fees during standby hours

    • Fuel and light allowance, and rent allowance as per the DC policy
