Dishwashers, Washing Machines and Tumble Dryers

  • Avoid using your tumble dryer when you're out or asleep.
  • Do not overload your tumble dryer. Overloading can lead to overheating and increase the risk of fire.
  • Air-dry clothing contaminated with flammable substances such as oils, grease, or solvents. These can ignite when exposed to high heat.
  • Clean your tumble dryer's lint filter after every use. Built-up fluff and lint are a common cause of dryer fires.
  • Ensure your tumble dryer has proper ventilation. Check that the vent pipe is free from kinks and that external flaps open correctly during use.
  • Stop using your tumble dryer if you notice scorch marks, damaged wires, or loose connections.
  • Always follow any appliance manufacturer's instructions for safe use and maintenance.
  • Avoid running your appliances overnight or when you're not at home.
  • Clean appliance filters regularly and inspect detergent drawers for cracks, which can allow water to reach electrical components.

Many electrical products are never registered by their owners, which means recalled items often remain in use without anyone knowing they're unsafe. This can pose a serious fire risk in the home.

To help protect yourself and your family, use the link below to check whether your appliances are listed on the recall register, and take action if they are.

Electric Blankets

Electric blankets can be a convenient way to stay warm, but they must be used and maintained carefully to prevent fire risks.

  • Always unplug your electric blanket before getting into bed, unless it has a thermostatic control designed for safe overnight use.
  • Replace your blanket if it becomes soiled, frayed, or worn, especially if you notice exposed wires or scorch marks.
  • Do not use electric blankets that are more than 10 years old. Have them professionally serviced every 3 years; your retailer can advise on this.
  • Avoid buying second-hand electric blankets. Always check that the product displays a current safety standard mark.
  • Do not use an electric blanket if you experience incontinence, even if you wear protective pads.
  • Never use an electric blanket alongside a dynamic airflow mattress.
  • If you use emollient skin creams, avoid letting excess cream dry onto the blanket, as it can intensify a fire if one occurs.
  • When storing your blanket, roll it loosely rather than folding it to protect the internal wiring.

To ensure your electric blanket, or any household appliance, is safe to use, check whether it’s listed on the product recall register using the link below. This simple step can help prevent fire risks from faulty or recalled items.
