Safe and Well Partnerships

We rely on partner organisations, such as carers, social workers, district nurses, and other professionals, to help identify and mitigate fire risks in the homes we visit. Your role is crucial in recognising potential fire risks.

All referrals should be made via our website, where questions will determine the risk level based on our referral risk matrix. Please provide detailed information about the individual’s home, lifestyle, and behaviours, along with your contact details or your workplace contact number. We may need to contact you to support our intelligence gathering and assessment of risk before arranging a visit. Inform the individual that we will be contacting them, and it may take a few weeks for initial contact.

Recent Updates

(Date:31/03/2025) WYFRS no longer accepts Safe and Well visit requests where a threat of arson has been identified. This is a police matter and should be reported to West Yorkshire Police.

If you are West Yorkshire Police attempting to make a Safe and Well visit referral due to a threat of arson being identified, please follow your NEW internal process, details of which can be found on your intranet site.

If you are another organisation attempting to make a Safe and Well visit referral due to a threat of arson being identified, please report the threat directly to West Yorkshire Police on their non-emergency phone 101.

Ensuring Safety

We offer a range of services to ensure the safety of individuals in their homes:

  • Joint Visits: We can conduct joint visits to support the individual.
  • Tailored Fire Safety Advice: We provide personalised fire safety advice based on the occupant's home, lifestyle, and behaviours.
  • Signposting: We can direct individuals to relevant organisations, such as befriending services.
  • Installation of Detection: We install smoke and heat detectors where necessary and assess the need for specialist detection, such as deaf alarms and linked detection systems. If the installation and maintenance of smoke detection lies with a landlord or responsible person, we will liaise with them.

Supporting the Referral Process

Here are some ways you can support the Safe and Well visit referral process:

  • Identify Fire Risks: Be vigilant about potential fire risks in the homes you visit, such as faulty wiring, overloaded sockets, and combustibles near the cooker.
  • Promote Fire Safety: Encourage individuals to visit our website's safety advice pages for comprehensive fire safety information.
  • Look, Test, Talk: Check for smoke detectors, test them, and talk to individuals about the importance of having working smoke detectors and conducting simple maintenance.
  • Property Visit: To accurately assess risks and complete the referral form, you must have visited the property.  Please note: The occupant must be living on the property, not in the hospital.
  • Lone Working: Share relevant information about any risks that may impact the health and safety of WYFRS staff who lone work
  • Risk Information: Complete all risk questions accurately and provide detailed comments, including information about other services involved and additional referrals made for the individual.

By following these steps, you can play a vital role in enhancing the fire safety of our communities.

Making a Referral

Click here to visit the Safe and Well page to make a referral.

Whether you are a formal partner of WYFRS or a third party, such as a charity, you can make a referral on our website. You can request a visit on behalf of someone else (with their consent) to determine their eligibility. Please provide your contact details so we can contact you if needed, and ensure you choose the right options on the referral form. Visit our Safe and Well page to learn more about a Safe and Well visit referral.

While we strive to provide comprehensive support, there are certain services we do not offer during Safe and Well visits:

  • Property Clearing: We do not clear properties due to hoarding.
  • Carbon Monoxide Detectors: We do not provide or install carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Risk Assessments: We do not write risk assessments for occupants or carers working within the home.
  • Uninformed Visits: We will not carry out visits in an individual’s home without their knowledge, if they are not home, or not currently living at the property.
