Wheelie Bins

  • Store bins securely: Keep wheelie bins out of sight and away from your property, especially doors and windows. If possible, store them behind locked gates.
  • Avoid arson risks: Only put bins out on collection day and bring them back promptly. Don’t overfill or leave loose rubbish around them.
Keep hot items out: Never place smoking materials, hot ash, or embers in bins.
  • Clear clutter: Don’t leave mattresses, cardboard, or other flammable items outside. Take them to a local waste site or arrange a bulk collection with your council.
  • Gas cylinder disposal: Contact the retailer to collect empty or unwanted LPG cylinders.

Protect your property. Don’t let your bin become a target.

Barbeques

  • Never leave a BBQ unattended.
  • Use on a flat, stable surface.
  • For charcoal BBQs, use just enough to cover the base (about 50mm/2 inches).
  • Only use BBQ-specific firelighters and fuel.
  • After use, dampen ashes with water, never bin hot ash.

Gas BBQs

  • Check cylinders and pipes for cracks or leaks. If damaged, don’t use.
  • Suspect a leak? Move the cylinder to a ventilated area, away from flames, and contact the supplier.
  • When finished, turn off the gas cylinder before the BBQ controls to burn off any remaining gas.

Stay safe and enjoy your BBQ responsibly.

Planning a Bonfire or Controlled Burning? Let Us Know First

WYFRS often responds to calls about fires that turn out to be planned bonfires or land clearance. These false alarms waste resources and pose risks during emergency responses.

If you're planning a visible fire such as a bonfire, stubble burning, or any fire on farmland, please notify our Control Room in advance on: 0113 823 7007 (non-emergency)

Provide:

  • The exact location of the fire
  • Planned start and end times
  • A contact number for the responsible person

This helps us avoid unnecessary callouts and keeps everyone safe.
