Key safety tips for smokers...

  • Smoke outside wherever possible, and never smoke in bed.
  • Avoid smoking when you feel drowsy or are affected by alcohol, drugs, or medication.
  • Always fully extinguish cigarettes and dispose of them in a proper ashtray, ideally one with a little water in the bottom.
  • Never empty ash directly into plastic containers or bins, as this can easily start a fire.
  • Regularly empty ashtrays to prevent build-up and reduce fire risk.

By staying alert and following these steps, you can help keep your home and loved ones safe.

E-Cigarettes

While e-cigarettes are often seen as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, they still carry fire and safety risks, especially when not used or stored correctly. Follow these tips to stay safe:

Charging and Battery Safety

  • Only use the charger provided with your device or one recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Never leave e-cigarettes charging unattended, especially overnight.
  • Avoid charging near flammable materials or on soft furnishings.
  • Don’t overcharge; unplug once fully charged to prevent overheating.

Storage and Handling

  • Keep e-cigarettes and spare batteries away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Store batteries in a protective case to prevent contact with metal objects like keys or coins, which can cause short circuits.
  • Avoid using damaged devices or batteries; replace them immediately if you notice swelling, leaking, or overheating.
    General Use

General use

  • Never use e-cigarettes near oxygen tanks or medical oxygen equipment.
  • Dispose of used batteries and devices responsibly, following local recycling guidelines. You can check your postcode to find nearby recycling points in shops and supermarkets through the Recycle Your Electricals website here.
