Job Purpose: As a Data Engineer at West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, you’ll be the architect behind the data that drives life-saving decisions. You’ll design and build smart, scalable data solutions including pipelines and models. You will be instrumental in our extract load and transformation using tools such as Microsoft Fabric and Microsoft Azure to support our Power BI. You will be responsible for making sure our data is clean, connected and ready to power everything from frontline operations to strategic planning. Working closely with analysts and data quality experts, you’ll turn complex data into clear insights that help protect our communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and build scalable data pipelines using Microsoft Fabric and Microsoft Azure
  • Create robust data models and architectures that power strategic decisions.
  • Collaborate with analysts and data quality teams to ensure clean, trusted, high-performance data.
  • Integrate data from operational systems, APIs and cloud platforms.
  • Champion data governance, security and ethical use.

Essential requirements:

  • Proven experience in data engineering, including Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft Azure, SQL, DAX or scripting languages like Python.
  • A strong grasp of data modelling, semantic layers and performance optimisation.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to explain complex data concepts to non-technical colleagues.
  • A commitment to public service.

Essential requirements:

  • GCSE Maths & English Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)

  • Great communication skills, desire to learn and inquisitive mind

This is a new role within the department and it’s an exciting opportunity to shape our future and your own career. You will join a supportive team that has a collaborative ethos and clear direction. 

Your role

You will have the opportunity to support all areas of the finance function and wider business giving you a broad experience of the Authority and Local Authority Accounting whilst also having defined responsibilities and projects to complete. We will support you to study for the CIPFA professional qualification, with the payment of course fees, day release to attend college and leave to study for exams. More information on the qualification is available at the CIPFA web site. We plan to access the CIPFA Level 7 Professional Accountancy qualification through the Apprenticeship route. You will be instrumental in the development of our MS Teams Platform and processes.
