Fixed term for 12 months

You answer the call -

“Help me! My house is on fire and me and my kids can’t get out. We were asleep and the fire alarm woke us up. I don’t know what to do. There’s smoke everywhere and my feet are burning, and my kids can’t stop coughing. We’re going to die. I can’t remember if I blew out the candles in the living room. It’s getting really hot, and I can’t breathe.”

If you feel you have, or could have the skills to answer this call, you could be what we’re looking for.

As a Fire Service Emergency Response Controller, you are the first point of contact when receiving 999 calls from members of the public and other agencies relating to requests for emergency and non-emergency assistance.

Your role is to gather information, to decide the best course of action, mobilise operational crews and inform other agencies of need for support services. Consider all factors which influence an efficient and effective response, provide fire safety advice to callers, including determining risks to their safety and advising on immediate action until Firefighters arrive, including ongoing support through to conclusion of the incident.

You will need to be a highly effective communicator, whilst remaining calm and focused under emotionally challenging situations. You will have the ability to make decisions based on the assessment of risk and be an effective team player in a dynamic environment.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Incident management.
  • Maintaining information on Emergency Fire Service operational resources.
  • Maintain reliability and readiness of control operations equipment.
  • Enter and integrate data and present information using a computer system.

This role is based around a shift system which operates a rolling 8 day pattern of: day, day, night, night, 4 days off.

About you:

  • Ideally you will have experience in a similar role or be a confident and effective telephone communicator.
  • Be empathetic and have good listening skills
  • You must possess a GCSE grade C English and Maths (or equivalent level 2 numeracy and literacy qualification) or have obtained an NVQ level 3 emergency fire services control operations qualification.
  • An aptitude and motivation to undertake an initial training course which will be Monday to Friday 0800-1700.
  • Commit to continuous professional development.
  • Undertake audio tests and a touch-typing assessment at a minimum of 30 words, per minute.

There is a medical required for this role which must be passed prior to a contract being offered.

Description

In this vital role, you’ll monitor and improve data quality across systems, develop dashboards and reports and collaborate with teams to resolve data issues. Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor, assess and improve data quality across multiple systems and databases.
  • Develop and maintain data quality dashboards and generate reports from data systems as required.

  • Support data cleansing activities, resolve inconsistencies or gaps, and work with relevant teams to address issues.
  • Provide training and support to users on data quality practices.
  • Promote adherence to the NFCC Core Code of Ethics and WYFRS values, and support organisational policies including GDPR, safeguarding, and business continuity.

Essential requirements:

  • Demonstrable knowledge and/or experience of data regulations (e.g. GDPR).
  • Experience using data within systems and databases.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, particularly Excel.
  • Literacy and numeracy at Level 2 / GCSE Maths and English Grade C/4 or equivalent, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to resolve data issues.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to maintaining data accuracy.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical teams.

Shortlisting

Following the closing date, submitted application forms will be forwarded to the Shortlisting Panel for consideration. All applicants will be advised via email as to whether or not they have been successfully shortlisted.

2: Pre-Development

During the pre-development stage Internal pathway candidates are required to complete phase 1 of the development programme which must be completed within 6 months.

3: Selection process for promotion

CPG Career Progression Gateway

Career Progression Gateway (CPG) is an online assessment that evaluates performance, knowledge, skills and behaviours. Applicants will be assessed and graded (Pass or Fail). The CPG will consist of 2 online exercises:

  1. The case study exercise

In this timed exercise, applicants receive various pieces of information along with clear task guidelines. They must read the provided information and type their responses, which may include writing an email or article, drafting a proposal and recommendation, or conducting an analysis, strategy, and initiative, all within free text boxes during the allotted time.

  1. The role-play exercise

Applicants have a set time to read the scenario information before an assessor calls them via video. The role-play begins and is timed from the moment the candidate answers the call.

Operational Command Assurance

Applicants will be assessed and graded (Pass or Fail) against Skills for Justice Intermediate Incident Command scoring criteria. However, prior to this assessment taking place, development opportunities will be available for all successful shortlisted candidates.

HR will confirm sessions available to all applicants. However, any attendance on this development session is voluntary.

Interview and Presentation

Applicants will be required to prepare a 10 minute presentation, of which the title will be given beforehand and a 60 minute interview.

4: Formal Appointments

Successful applicants will be held on a successful applicant list in merit order and will be offered a promotion role, applicable to that promotion process rank, as soon as a suitable vacancy arises.

5: Substantive (Development) roles

Successful applicants that are offered and accept a promotion role will be paid at development rate of pay and required to complete Phase 2 and 3 of the development programme, with competent pay awarded on successful completion of the development pack and all associated courses.

6: Competent in role sign off.

On completion of phase 2 and 3 of the development pack, Learning and Development team will review the pack and subject to the quality and range of evidence provided being sufficient, the pack will be signed off and the candidate deemed competent in role, at which point competent pay will be awarded and the candidates role made substantive.
