Cooking Safety

Cooking is at the heart of many celebrations, but it’s also one of the leading causes of household fires. Keep your kitchen safe with these essential tips:

  • Stay alert: Never cook if you're under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication that makes you drowsy.
  • Stay present: Never leave cooking unattended. Fires can start in seconds.
  • Stay mindful: Be cautious with loose clothing, especially items like headscarves. Keep them well away from naked flames.

Candle Safety

Every year, many adults and children are injured due to the fire risk around candles. Taking a few simple precautions will reduce the risks for yourself and your family.

  • Avoid distractions: Don’t use candles if you’re under the influence of alcohol, recreational drugs, or medication that affects your alertness.
  • Stay nearby: Only light candles in rooms where you’re present and avoid using them around children or pets who might accidentally knock them over.
  • Use with care: Always place candles in sturdy, heat-resistant holders, away from decorations, draughts, curtains, soft furnishings, and under shelves.

Electricals

When decorating your home, be mindful of fire risks. A few safe choices can help prevent accidents and keep your celebrations joyful.

  • Check your festive lights carry the British Safety Standard (BS) kitemark.
  • Inspect lights carefully for damage, broken bulbs, or worn wires before use.
  • Switch off and unplug lights before going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Avoid overloading sockets. Use only one plug per socket, especially when using extra electrical items during celebrations.
  • Keep paper decorations, ribbons, and greeting cards away from heat sources and open flames.

Sky Lanterns
White

Sky lanterns are often used to mark celebrations, but it's important to be aware of the fire risks they pose.

  • Wildfires: Lanterns can land on dry grass, woodland, or farmland, sparking fires that spread rapidly and endanger lives and property.
  • Animal harm: Wildlife and livestock can be injured by lantern debris or startled by the flames, leading to distress or injury.
  • Property damage: Lanterns can drift unpredictably and land on buildings, vehicles, or other structures, potentially causing fires.
  • Environmental impact: The wire frames and materials used in lanterns can litter the landscape and pose hazards to animals long after the flame has gone out.

Consider safer alternatives like LED lights or biodegradable decorations to celebrate without the risk.
